SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND HUMANITARIAN COMMITTEE

The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is the third UN General assembly focused on promoting

human rights, social development, and humanitarian issues globally. In the past this committee has passed resolutions

related to women’s rights, human rights, cultural rights, and global humanitarian issues.

A committee with a broad oversight, SOCHUM is suitable for beginner to experienced delegates alike. Position papers,

while highly recommended, are not required for SOCHUM. However, if delegates wish to be considered for an award,

they must submit a position paper.

Imanzi Rugwe | Director

As a Grade 12 student, Model United Nations has been a passion for Imanzi ever since he started in the eighth grade. Though he has never mastered the art of debate he has grown to love it, from debating the reduction of poverty in french as Kenya to fighting off protestants and concentrating wealth in South America as Gaspar de Guzman, he has thoroughly loved his time in Model UN. On his fourth and last iteration of SMUSMUN before he graduates, he is eager to observe lively debates during his first time as Director and create memories that all SOCHUM delegates can cherish for years. When not in a committee room, Imanzi loves to play Basketball and Rugby, watching movies and shows, and playing games.

Stella McGrath | Chair

As a Grade 10 student at Glenlyon Norfolk School, Stella is ecstatic to serve as SOCHUM’s Chair for SMUSMUN 2026. During her 3 years of Model UN, Stella has had the privilege of attending 9 conferences and working as USG Committees at GMUN. Outside of the committee room, Stella is a competitive dancer, dance teacher, Vital Youth member, and much more. She is beyond excited to create the best environment possible for SOCHUM Delegates!

Jacob Ji | Assistant Director

To be frank, Jacob spent quite some time trying to draft a "quirky" bio about his Model UN journey, but he’d rather be direct. Grade 10 Jacob Ji is incredibly excited to step into my very first staffing role for this session of SOCHUM. He’s genuinely thrilled to be here, principally because he gets to sit back and watch delegates tackle decades of global systemic dysfunction in a chaotic sub-24-hour sprint. Whether you’re in the back row playing chess.com, attending solely because your friends said “just trust me,” or planning to be a chaotic menace, he’s been there. Outside of labouring, Jacob can be found playing volleyball, The Finals, and maintaining his number 1 standing for Rhythm Typer in Canada.
