FICTIONAL JOINT CRISIS COMMITTEE

FICTIONAL JOINT CRISIS COMMITTEE

The Fictional Joint Crisis Committee (FJCC) represents the pinnacle of Model United Nations in complexity, challenge, and ambition. FJCC consists of two independently running subcommittees whose decisions and actions affect the perpetual crisis at hand. The ritual raising of placards is replaced with intergalactic espionage, fast paced decision making, and ceaseless debates, all aimed to destroy the enemy. Delegates in this specific form of committee will be tasked with hidden challenges that may come in the form of covert plots, terrible luck, and the well-meaning—or antagonistic—actions of the opposing committee. Together these offer an unpredictable but undoubtedly exciting experience. Delegates in FJCC at SMUSMUN 2026 must compromise, negotiate, and persevere in a battle of diplomatic wit; or else the future of the galaxy may be victim to your decisions.

The Fictional Joint Crisis Committee is most appropriate for experienced delegates. Position papers are mandatory and must be submitted by November 15, 2026, at 23:59 PT. More information about position papers sepcific to this committee can be found in the Delegate Guide, on the Delegate Resources page.

You can contact the Director at fjcc@smusmun.org. Any questions regarding the committee or its debate procedures will be answered by email. Position papers must also be submitted to this address.

Saoirse McDowell

Now in her 5th year of Model United Nations, Saoirse is thrilled to serve as your Crisis Overlord for SMUSMUN 2026. Since beginning Model UN in Grade 7, she has developed a passion for debate, diplomacy, and the excitement of crisis committees through countless conferences and experiences. Outside of MUN, Saoirse loves Star Wars–of course–all things media-related, spending time with friends, and making unforgettable memories. She hopes your SMUSMUN FJCC experience will be one for the history books; therefore full of creativity, chaos, and collaboration. Saoirse wishes all delegates the very best in their preparation and reminds everyone: May the Force be with You All!

Paul Holland | Bloc Director

Now entering his fifth year of Model UN, Paul is honoured to serve as Director of this year’s Star Wars-themed FJCC-A. Since his first experience with Model UN, Paul has grown to love it and has participated in several conferences, though he will never stop putting off his position papers until the last minute. Outside of committee sessions, he can be found watching movies, listening to music, and generally trying to ignore the impending deadlines for his schoolwork. He is eager to welcome this year’s delegates to SMUSMUN, whether they’re completely new to the Star Wars universe or die-hard fans. Either way, he can’t wait to direct this year’s FJCC-A and to provide a (hopefully) fun and exciting experience for everyone in attendance this year!

Liam Kingsbury | Bloc Chair

Liam is delighted to serve as Chair in FJCC-A for SMUSMUN this year. He has had five years of Model UN experience to understand it all, yet he remarkably remains clueless about most of the goings on. This has not prevented him from developing a great enjoyment for debate, meeting other delegates, and attending conferences. Through MUN, he has also discovered his hatred for citing sources, and despises noodletools from the bottom of his heart. Ever since he read Origami Yoda in grade four, Liam has been feverishly obsessed with the greatest movie/show/book/video game franchise to ever grace this earth, and promises to deliver all his delegates an unforgettable experience. He hopes that no one will have a bad feeling about this!

Rachel Oliver | Bloc Assistant Director

Four years into her Model UN experience, Rachel is honoured and excited to serve as the Assistant Director of FJCC-A this year. Although she may not be the most talented delegate in the room, Rachel has developed a love for international relations and debate since her first conference in Grade 7, and more recently has entered the exciting world of MUN staffing. When she isn’t in western business attire, Rachel is probably rowing. If she somehow has time to spare, she can be found reading, procrastinating, or going on side quests with her friends. She can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable FJCC conference and wishes delegates all the best in their upcoming Star Wars marathons!

Kieran MacKay | Bloc Director

As a grade 12 student at St. Michaels University School, Kieran is thrilled to serve as your Director of JCC-B in this year's iteration of SMUSMUN. His first Model UN experience was in grade 6, held online during the COVID pandemic. Intimidated by the lower voices coming from their mics, he spoke just 3 times. Since his hesitant start in his MUN journey, he has been hooked on the competition, attending as many committees as possible, transforming his initial fear into a passion. Outside of the committee room, Kieran can be found playing sports or video games. He is truly excited for what will hopefully be a weekend of extremely passionate debate.

Lev Zilber-Shlensky | Bloc Chair

Lev is honored to serve as Chair for JCC-B. He is very versed in Model UN, starting in the sixth grade and since having participated in more than 15 conferences, both on the island and in Vancouver. Part of his driving force for Model UN comes from a desire for peace in a very chaotic and unpredictable world. He is hoping to interact with delegates in a meaningful, compassionate, and fun way. Outside of MUN, Lev can be found playing video/card games or reading. He is very excited to participate in this conference and this committee!

Eli Alexander | Bloc Assistant Director

As an overly-excited Grade 12 student, JCC-B Assistant Director Eli reminds delegates of the lessons he’s learned since joining Model UN, as a very small but loud seventh grader. He’s seen that alongside the beauty of human-kind, its society will never be flawless, but to him, attempting to fix societal oversights is what matters most. Being highly dedicated, Eli has attended 15 conferences, including having co-led both SMUSMUN 2025 as Secretary-General, and SMUS’ own Model UN club for two years. Although nowhere close to ‘finishing’ Model UN, Eli prepares for his 16th conference and final SMUSMUN, by insisting that delegates invite lively debate. Whether the topic is fictional Star Wars Crisis scenarios, or real-world events, acknowledging the benefits that come with UN-style debate is essential.
